An Entropy Threshold for Strong Hα and Radio Emission in the Cores of Galaxy Clusters

چکیده

Our Chandra X-ray Observatory archival study of intracluster entropy in a sample of 222 galaxy clusters shows that Hα and radio emission from the brightest cluster galaxy are much more pronounced when the cluster’s core gas entropy is . 30 keV cm2. The prevalence of Hα emission below this threshold indicates that it marks a dichotomy between clusters that can harbor multiphase gas and star formation in their cores and those that cannot. The fact that strong central radio emission also appears below this boundary suggests that AGN feedback turns on when the intracluster medium starts to condense, strengthening the case for AGN feedback as the mechanism that limits star formation in the Universe’s most luminous galaxies. Integral field spectroscopy of H α emission in cooling flow cluster cores : disturbing the molecular gas reservoir ⋆

We present optical integral field spectroscopy of the Hα-luminous (> 10 42 erg s −1) central cluster galaxies in the cores of the cooling flow clusters A1664, A1835, A2204 and Zw8193. From the [NII]+Hα complex in these moderate resolution (70–150 km s −1) spectra we derive two-dimensional views of the distribution and kinematics of the emission line gas, and further diagnostics from the [SII] a...

What is a Cool - Core Cluster ? A Detailed Analysis of the Cores of the X - ray Flux - Limited HIFLUGCS Cluster Sample

We use the largest complete sample of 64 galaxy clusters (HIghest X-ray FLUx Galaxy Cluster Sample) with available highquality X-ray data from Chandra, and apply 16 cool-core diagnostics to them, some of them new. In order to identify the best parameter for characterizing cool-core clusters and quantify its relation to other parameters, we mainly use very high spatial resolution profiles of cen...

Near - Infrared Spectroscopy of Powerful Radio Galaxies at z = 2 . 2 −

Near-infrared spectroscopy (λrest ∼ 3700–6800 Å) of eight high redshift powerful radio galaxies (HzPRGs) at z = 2.2 − 2.6 is presented. Strong forbidden lines and Hα emission were detected in all sources; the data show evidence that the emission lines of the HzPRGs may contribute a substantial fraction (∼ 25–98 %) of their total observed Hand/or K-band light. Diagnostic emission-line ratios – [...

Entropy Limit and the Cold Feedback Mechanism in Cooling Flow Clusters

I propose an explanation to the finding that star formation and visible filaments strong in Hα emission in cooling flow clusters occur only if the minimum specific entropy and the radiative cooling time of the intracluster medium (ICM), are below a specific threshold. The explanation is based on the cold feedback mechanism. In this mechanism the mass accreted by the central black hole originate...

A search for clusters at high redshift - IV. Spectroscopy of Hα emitters in a proto-cluster at z = 2.16

Radio galaxy PKS 1138−262 is a massive galaxy at z = 2.16, located in a dense environment. We have found an overdensity of Lyα emitting galaxies in this field, consistent with a proto-cluster structure associated with the radio galaxy. Recently, we have discovered forty candidate Hα emitters by their excess near infrared narrow band flux. Here, we present infrared spectroscopy of nine of the br...
